How do I know if my imported goods will arrive in good condition?

Receiving the merchandise you purchased damaged or in poor condition can be one of the most unpleasant and frustrating experiences in the import business.

That is why it is of paramount importance to know those factors over which we have control and that can help reduce the risks of the merchandise being damaged due to mishandling or during transportation.

Packaging, a fundamental element

The answer to this question leads us to the importance of packaging.

I have seen how many importers give so much importance to the purchase and characteristics of the product and minimize the packaging when it is extremely important to protect the product in transit.

You must consider that it is very likely that if it does not travel in a container hired exclusively to transport the merchandise, it will surely suffer several unloading and loading maneuvers.

To load the truck or van that picks it up, to unload it in a warehouse, then reload it to load it into a container, plane or truck that will make the long journey, unload it at the port, airport destination, possible loading and unloading maneuvers at the terminals, load it into another truck that will take it out of customs, etc!

Forklifts can touch the goods many times! Even inside a container the goods are subject to undergo natural movement along the way.

 

Three simple recommendations to reduce the risk of your import goods arriving damaged

  1. Require the supplier to pack the goods appropriately so that they can withstand all the natural maneuvers and movements of the trip. Remember that carriers are instructed to pick up the goods, but they do not do the packing.
  2. Do not skimp on the quality of the packaging. Packaging is so important that even cargo insurers emphasize that poor packaging can be grounds for them to cancel insurance payments in case of damage.
  3. Send an inspector prior to loading to check the packaging and any other details that need to be corrected before shipment to increase the chances of the goods arriving in good condition.
